Could There be Whales?

I named this blog based on a translation of a Japanese Tanka poem:

far and near
the sound of conches
along the seashore
the clamors of boatsmen
could there be whales coming?
--- Mori Ogai

I love the sea, and the sense of anticipation in this poem captured my imagination. Two good things, especially at the advent of a new year.
